RESTORATION – Our Expertise: Rebuilding and Conserving CRT-Based Artworks
At the heart of our work is the restoration and preservation of CRT-based artworks.
With our specialized equipment and in-depth expertise, we breathe new life into CRT monitors, fully restoring both the electronics and picture tubes to their original functionality.
Currently, we are the only company in the world able to renew picture tubes, an essential component of CRT-based artworks.
We believe that preserving the original technology is crucial for maintaining the authenticity and cultural value of these works.
By restoring the picture tubes, we aim to ensure that the artwork remains true to the artist’s original vision, preserving its integrity and significance for future generations.
Since 2015, Colorvac has been dedicated to media art conservation. We collaborate with institutions like ZKM Karlsruhe and art conservators worldwide.
In addition to CRT handling, installation, and conservation, we also offer specialized workshops on CRT care.
The History of Colorvac
Founded in 1964 by Peter Draheim, Colorvac initially specialized in the renewal of CRT screens. During the era of CRT TVs, it was common for people to have their faulty picture tubes refurbished instead of purchasing new television sets. Colorvac quickly gained a reputation for its expertise in renewing all types and brands of tubes—a rare skill at the time, as most repair shops only serviced certain models or newer equipment.
However, when the global shift toward LCD technology emerged, many CRT repair shops were forced to close their doors.
Years after the CRT era came to an end, the Kunstpalast Düsseldorf reached out to Christian Draheim with a request to restore the iconic artwork Fish Flies On Sky by Nam June Paik. Unfortunately, all the original CRT equipment had been discarded. In response, Christian Draheim took it upon himself to rebuild the original workshop from scratch, determined to preserve CRT-based art for future generations.
Since then, Colorvac has been dedicated to safeguarding CRT-based artwork, ensuring its legacy endures for years to come.
